Literature as cultural discourse has always courted mobility. From the nomadic wanderings of the heroes of Homer and Virgil through the adventures of the medieval knight-errants to the travellers of modern times, movement and mobility have been constitutive elements of story-telling. Since writers have begun to explore the experiential dimension of movement their texts have embraced the essential changeability and instability of ‘mobile worlds’. In this sense literature reflects and processes the transformative force of movement on the perception of the world and is part of the broader cultural discourses of mobility. From the 1936 film Night Mail to the rapid movements of the dime novel detective and the metaphorical coding of automobility in Futurist poetry, the essays in this volume offer new perspectives on the phenomenon of mobility at the intersection between the literary imagination and cultural experience. They explore movement as a decisive force of change in the history of modernity and show how literature in its representation of mobility simultaneously aims both to mirror and to grasp the phenomenon.

Doelstellingen: Dit onderzoek analyseert of er sprake is van subjectiviteit in de Amerikaanse pers in de berichtgeving over en editoriale commentaar op de presidentverkiezingen in 2012. Het corpus is samengesteld uit artikelen van The Washington Times en The New York Times, die respectievelijk een conservatieve en liberaal-progressieve politieke affiliatie hebben. Deze studie wil nagaan of deze politieke voorkeur ook in de berichtgeving aanwezig is, in de framing van onderwerpen enerzijds en de woordkeuze anderzijds. Indien er inderdaad sprake is van subjectiviteit, wil het onderzoek de formulering van standpunten in kaart brengen. Middelen of methode: Een corpus van 20 artikels werd samengesteld, waarin vijf verschillende thema's aan bod kwamen, die geselecteerd werden op basis van hun aanwezigheid in de nationale media en hun invloed op de campagnes van beide kandidaten: het homohuwelijk, gezondheidszorg, de economie, het gelekte filmpje waardoor presidentskandidaat Romney in een negatief daglicht kwam te staan, en het eerste presidentiële debat dat voor Obama nadelig bleek te zijn. Uit The Washington Times en The New York Times werden voor elk onderwerp telkens een opiniestuk en een nieuwsartikel geselecteerd. Deze artikels werden geanalyseerd aan hand van appraisal theory. Vervolgens werd er een onderscheid gemaakt tussen impliciete en expliciete oordelen en werd onderzocht welk woordgebruik en welke stijlkenmerken enerzijds een opinie expliciteren of impliciet kenbaar maken en anderzijds via welk woordgebruik en welke stijlkenmerken een politieke affiliatie verhuld werd. Resultaten: Uit de analyse aan de hand van appraisal theory is gebleken dat The Washington Times zich heel kritisch toonde tegenover het beleid van President Obama en steeds conservatieve standpunten innam omtrent sociale thema's. The New York Times stond daarentegen volledig achter een tweede ambtstermijn voor President Obama en haalde vaak uit naar Gouverneur Romney. In de nieuwsartikels probeerden de kranten hun objectiviteit de benadrukken door steeds te verwijzen naar feiten en cijfers die hun ingenomen standpunt bevestigden. Deze werden echter in een bepaald kader geplaatst, de zogenaamde “framing”, waardoor het artikel steeds een bepaalde lading kreeg. Terwijl de nieuwsartikels dus eerder impliciet hun mening lieten doorschemeren, waren in de opiniestukken de standpunten expliciet uitgedrukt. Om hun mening kracht bij te zetten stonden krachtige beelden, kleurrijk taalgebruik en stijlfiguren centraal. Door het gebruik van o.a. metaforen, uitdrukkingen en sarcasme werd de vaak heel expliciet positieve of negatieve houding ten opzichte van een presidentskandidaat beklemtoont, om zo eventueel de mening van het leespubliek te kunnen beïnvloeden. Er kan dus geconcludeerd worden dat beide kranten hun politieke voorkeur in hun berichtgeving niet kunnen verdoezelen. De feiten worden steeds geframed in de politieke en sociale opvattingen eigen aan de krant. Dit toont aan dat de media een belangrijke en machtige functie uitoefenen in het beïnvloeden van het stemgedrag van de lezers.
